Did you know that reducing your speed with 5% can result in a 30% reduction in the number of fatal road traffic crashes? The UN Road Safety Week 2017 will take place from 9 to 14 May. The Week will focus on speed and what can be done to address this key risk factor for road traffic deaths and injuries.
Speed contributes to around one-third of all fatal road traffic crashes in high-income countries, and up to half in low- and middle-income countries, often the countries in which UNHCR operates their vehicles as well.
UNHCR staff members can support UN Road Safety week by:
- Signing the special ‘Road Safety Week’ pledge (link to pledge)
- Organizing a ‘Save Lives. Slow Down!’ activity in their community (link to toolkit)
- Raising awareness to Slow Down in the office (link to posters)
- And off course; by always driving at an appropriate speed for the road and weather conditions.
